When I used to make these I would pretend my cell phone was a mini recorder that shrunk down with me. And I was using it to document everything that was happening around me. I enjoyed describing the different things that I was experiencing and I noticed the longer I was recording the more easier it was for me to really insert myself into a shrunken role.
Acting nervous or out of breath when I would hear his powerful footsteps coming towards my dollhouse, cage or wherever he likes to keep me. Whispering into the phone and describing the many different things he has done to me… etc lol
It’s so fun bc there’s so many different scenarios

Mad respect to anyone who is able to record themselves to share with others, whether it’s ASMR, roleplaying, radioplay-style, audiobook/narration, etc. I get too weirded out at hearing my own voice that I can’t even bring myself to listen to recordings to practice and improve

@SmolChlo I have a friend who is into SCP stuff and even wrote a couple articles. We both like to do exactly this for some of the stories you’ll often find accompanying the articles, it works perfectly for scary dystopian scenarios! I’ve been itching to try a size-themed recording though.

@skysayl it’s time to scratch that itch! I’d definitely give it a listen This discussion has put me in a role play kinda mood… maybe I’ll practice some recordings later tonight. Shutting off the lights and smoking a lil (if that’s your thing) helps with the creative flow ~

Just seconding the desire for more tiny lady audio roleplays. Audio is the most intimate genre of fiction to me and shrunken woman stuff is maybe some of the rarest and I usually just have to commission it myself, hahaha. I love listening to, writing, and performing audios so if anyone is ever in the mood to collaborate let me know.

It’s so unfair that there are literally hundreds of GTS/SM recordings, and so few SW ones.

About the intimate nature of audio, something I always wanted was a binaural (ie. positional 3D audio) recording simulating a tiny walking around you, say from one shoulder to the next, or on top of your head, or on your neck behind it.

I get goosebumps just imagining this.

@foreverlurk Ooo do you know what kinds of tools/programs are needed to make that kind of effect? I have experience with video editing, so I’ve done some amount of audio editing as a result, but nothing quite like that.

@littlest-lily It’s just a matter of separating the tracks into left and right channels. The tricky bit is smoothing them out in between.

@littlest-lily Can you imagine what (or who) put those 3D audio thoughts (literally) in my head, uh?

For a static recording, on the hardware side I think there are binaural microphones that allow you to record directly in 3D. Or, like @skysayl said, you can use manual panning to get the same effect but I guess there’s more work involved. My only experience is mixing music but that’s another ball game.

I’m doing research for a little project of mine on the software side of things, namely audio APIs, algorithms to simulate realistic spatial audio effects, room acoustics, sound source directivity, and HRTF functions. But that’s mostly about how to transform existing sounds to 3D in realtime for, say, a VR environment.

I think you can use two microphones back to back to simulate the listener’s ears? And move around them with your props and all. I can probably test that later.

@skysayl What software do you use? I’m used to stuff like final cut pro or imovie, but I’ve focused on the video editing and have never separated tracks in that way before.

@littlest-lily Don’t really need anything fancy if all you’re doing is voiceover. I’ve used Reaper once or twice, but I keep coming back to Audacity. Nice and simple!

@miss-lillipants Speaking as someone who HAS recorded himself doing this stuff, I hate listening to my own voice too. Here’s my secret for success: I never listen to my own recordings. I just record myself narrating the script, do it all in one take, and then I listen to the first one or two seconds of the recording (just to make sure it recorded correctly) and turn it off as fast as I can. Then I post it online without doing any further “quality control.” To this day, I’ve never listened to one of my own recordings all the way through. Not even once. It’s a very effective tactic! You just have to resist the urge to be a perfectionist about it. (I think that perfectionism is what causes people to listen through their own recordings, looking for flaws and problems.)
